Notes: For [livejournal.com profile] fivebyfiction - 04. Bluff

She ignores the looks, the pity and concern directed her way while they all struggle to see through the haze that is the immediate aftermath of a queen’s flight. She knows what has happened – what is going on as she steps across the commons cavern – and what it means. She’s been at Telgar for over twelve turns now, been Headwoman for two, and doesn’t need anyone to tell her that everything will be different now.

Lizabet finds her target and reaches out to yank at the collar of a middle-aged bluerider getting far too close to one of the fourteen turn old kitchen-girls for her liking. “Go find your weyrmate. Shells, find an older woman; I don’t care. If I see you near her again today...” she murmurs low in K’naugh’s ear, tugging him back.

Neither of them look grateful. She doesn’t suppose that they are and she finds her hand still rests at K’naugh’s collar and she has to jump it away as though burned.

Today, Emath rose in her maiden flight and Sherath caught her.

Today, Teyla has been confirmed as Telgar’s Weyrwoman and J’on as Weyrleader.

Now, J’on is in Teyla’s bed and their sharding broadcasting dragons have everyone but the most disciplined in the Weyr running on primal urges and no sense.

She has no right to be jealous or angry. Everyone knows that flights don’t count. Her weyrmate is in the new Weyrwoman’s bed and they have every right to do what they want for as long as they want. He hasn’t chosen any more than Teyla has. Maybe he has, part of her insists. Maybe he has and he didn’t try to hold Sherath back at all.

This isn’t the first time Sherath has caught and she has suffered through and pretended that she doesn’t care. Every time she thinks she’s managed to leave behind her Holder upbringing, there it is, every time J’on’s bronze flies a green. And now he has a queen. She can handle the losses, when he turns up still half flight-lost and is more rough with her than he means to be, because on some, awful, ridiculous level it means that he’s still hers.

She’s not jealous. She’s not. She doesn’t want the queens that passed her by, that left her on the Sands without a dragon of her own. First Catreth chose Telgar’s own Sam, transferred away to Fort only days after the Hatching, then, turns later, Emath chose Lady Teyla and that was that. Twenty-five turns and too old to be allowed to try again. Sometimes she thinks she would have liked a little green to choose her. She could have lived with being branded an abomination, she knows, but then... she knows she doesn’t need a dragon to feel whole. To give her an identity.

Speaking of supposed abominations...

Vala sits curled-up in a chair in a corner of the commons, mug of wine gripped with both hands. Telgar’s only female greenrider – Telgar’s mistake – looks up at her and holds out an arm as though to invite her into a hug. Vala’s commiserations aren’t for her and therefore can be accepted. They both know that, were it not for D’nel’s young brown being only six months old and the new brownrider not permitted to even touch her for another three months, he’d be in her bed right now. That Vala hasn’t found someone else willing surprises her and she steps over to show her approval with silence and the tilt of her head against the greenrider’s.

She smirks and another fact beyond J’on is in Teyla’s bed and I must not care registers. Vala is in J’on’s wing. The greenrider girl is now in the Weyrleader’s wing. Oh, how the more conservative riders will hate that. But Vala will do herself proud. She always does. There’s always a hiccup or two along the way and both she and Doranth have their fair share of scars, but they’re every inch the equal of their wingmates.

Vala murmurs, “He’s going to be busy every hour of every day now.”

She knows she’s not talking about D’nel. “Yes. I expect he’ll take to his new duties as he should.”

“I’m not sure I’ll be able to get used to him not being able to berate you about working,” Vala admits, slurring a little. Clearly she’s been on the wine for a while.

“I’m sure he’ll find a way. The caverns never sleep.” Lizabet smiles and runs a hand through the greenrider’s hair. “And if I have to answer to anyone, then I’m glad it’s Teyla. She’s not selfish or lazy and Emath is steady. They're strong. They’ll see us through.”

“Don’t think I could be so charitable about the woman my weyrmate was having sex with right now.”

“It’s not important,” she insists.

Vala snorts. “It is. You’re a good liar, darling, but you’re not dead inside.”

“Maybe so, but I’m also not a silly little girl getting worked-up over something she can’t control.” She pushes away from the arm of the chair and straightens, determinedly shoving away the lust that keeps threatening to overwhelm her. She’s not going to make a fool of herself today, especially not when everyone knows where her weyrmate is and must think it would be fair play, tit-for-tat on her part. “I’ve a letter to your home Hold to finish if you’d like to look it over? Your step-mother will probably read it before anyone else.”

“...I’d love to say that that’s the best offer I’ve had all day, but,” Vala knocks back the last of her wine and pushes herself to her feet, “it’s not. Not that I’m refusing, mind.”

Lizabet laughs – makes herself laugh - and shakes her head. “Come on, before someone overhears and we have to have ‘fully-literate’ added to your list of crimes.”

“Me?” Vala lifts her shoulders and smiles slowly. “I’m just a poor little innocent greenrider...”

As they move through the corridors, Lizabet hears the whispers and walks right past, head held high, though one of her assistants dares to call out:

“Before you know it, he’ll be spending his days and nights with her, you know...”

Her steps slow and she feels Vala whip round before she sees it, yet holds up a hand to try and silence the greenrider at her side. This once, Vala holds her tongue.

“Don’t you have work to do, Allie? I’m sure you can’t have finished that inventory I gave you this morning,” is all she says, nothing to be read in her expression but her usual calm and confidence. Turning back, she resumes the journey to her office; doesn’t see Vala stick her tongue out at the younger woman.

I don’t care. I don’t care. I don’t care.

It’s a good act. She knows that.

But will it be enough to fool J’on?

Ooh, this is very intriguing so far! Do you have plans for more in this universe, or is it a one-shot?

If they let themselves be written, then there's quite a bit to be said about D'nel's half-grown brown going after Doranth, J'ack and Sam's long-distance relationship, and Lizabet and Teyla working together. And R'ney, Carson and Z'enka playing poker. Oh dear. I think they're plans!
